The Chron has higher-res renderings of the proposed BART trains. They weren’t kidding about it being a huge project— the first ones are slated to come in 2014, with complete delivery by 2024. They’re planning on getting $1 billion for the project from the federal government, and scraping together $2.4 billion from fare hikes and other sources. The agency has some deep introspection ahead: hard or soft seats, side-facing or forward-facing… the kinds of decisions that could decide whether the cars stay eerily cushioned, or become enameled and utilitarian.
