Apple’s building a data center, but not in their backyard. Instead of expanding their current center in Newark (California, not Jersey), they’re spending a billion dollars to set up servers in North Carolina. By contrast, Microsoft and Google have spent about half that to set up their own digital clouds; so Apple’s investment is sizable, especially for a facility so far from Silicon Valley. Meanwhile the Newark property is still humming along; the company picked it up in 2006 for around $50 million after WorldCom was like, “oh, whoops, we don’t exist anymore.” [Financial Post]
