In an effort to end the foreclosure crisis, the Obama administration has been trying to keep defaulting owners in their homes. It now will take a new approach: paying some of them to leave.

An office of the U.S. Justice Department filed suit against bankrupt Seattle real-estate magnate Michael R. Mastro Wednesday, saying he has concealed or transferred property to keep it from creditors and made false statements under oath.

TransUnion said Monday that customers at least 60 days past due on repaying auto loans fell 6 percent during the fourth quarter compared with the same period a year earlier.

The government is giving homeowners another year to refinance their loans under a little-used program designed to help borrowers whose homes have plummeted in value.
